Book Blogger Hop (18)

Book Blogger Hop is a meme hosted by Ramblings of a Coffee Addicted Writer every Friday-Thursday. It's a great opportunity to network and visit other blogs and meet new bloggers.

This weeks question is:
"Do you pre-schedule your posts?"

I answered:
Oh yes I do; it is currently May 22nd and I am already writing this out lol. I have like 2 months worth of planned posts and start writing/creating them as soon as I have the content. Although I already know what I'm going to be posting on what day, I don't usually have more than a full week actually scheduled. My goal is to post daily so having them scheduled and ready to go helps me achieve this. Plus, with all the homework I have and my work schedule, sometimes I forget or don't have the time so this way I don't have to scramble to post something. I make changes here and there, but for the most part once I've scheduled something I don't really touch it unless I want to move it to a different date.

Feature & Follow Friday (35) / Friday 56 (4)

Feature & Follow Friday is a meme hosted by Parajunkiee's View & Alison Can Read. Check out their blogs and the two Featured Bloggers of the week! This is great for finding amazing new blogs to follow and for gaining followers yourself!

This weeks question is:
If you can step into one characters shoes (in a book) and be them for a day, who would it be and why? Also, if you want to be creative, what scene?

I answered:
This is so hard...There are so many great characters out there. I admire any character who is confident and unafraid to be themselves because those are some of the things I struggle with. I'd love to be a badass like Tris or Katniss or maybe a character that's constantly traveling because I have major wanderlust and am sadly too broke to do anything about it. lol

The Friday 56 is a meme hosted by Freda's Voice. Basically you flip to page 56 (or 56% in your eReader) of any book and post a sentence or two (more if you want) from that page without being too spoiler-y. This gives us a glimpse into what you are reading or have read, and may even prompt us to add your book to our TBR piles!

My teaser:
"So you're not denying you have a girlfriend."
"Nope. Not denying, but not confirming, either."
"Then can you tell us about this message you posted to your website last night? You asked girls to bring their undergarments to your show and toss them onstage for you. Was this a publicity stunt, and have you read any of the comments angry parents are leaving?"

Interview with Vanessa K. Eccles, Author of Fabled

Title: Fabled
Author: Vanessa K. Eccles
Release Date: May 5, 2015
Genre: YA, Fantasy

Rowena thinks the Grimm's infamous podcasts are simply another teen fad until she finds herself trapped in a land of nightmarish storybook characters. She tries desperately to flee Mezzanine and return home, but Dresdem, Mezzanine's wicked monarch, plans to use Rowena's access to her world to bring dark magic and absolute rule into Georgia and beyond.

But when Rowena's dear friend Madeline falls into Dresdem's grasp, her battle with him becomes war, and all hopes of home are temporarily thwarted. With the help of an invisible hero, a beast, and an owl, she sets out to free Madeline from a deadening sleep. But Rowena must become her own hero when she finds herself bound by the kingdom's darkest family. She must make the ultimate choice--align herself with her enemies or live on the run forever.

Hi Vanessa! Thanks for sitting down with us.
Where did you get your inspiration for your book?
I studied the Grimms for nearly a year before I started Fabled. I wrote an academic paper "Fairy Tales Revisited: Cause and Effect of Adult Enchantment" and presented it at the PCAS Conference in 2012. Later, I attended a poster session at my university with my paper, "A Grimm History: Nazi Uses and Abuses of Fairy Tales." It wasn't until I understood the true purpose of folklore that I realized how pivotal and timeless it is. I hope in some small way to have contributed to the literature with Fabled by not retelling what's already been told but building on it with new stories and characters.

What is Fabled about in two lines?
Trapped in a world of dark magic, Rowena must learn how to become her own hero. Easier said than done.

What are you working on now?
I'm currently drafting a young adult southern gothic about an orphan who finds her family in another time, and I'm also working on Book Two of Fabled.

What's your writing process like?
Lots of coffee and a touch of madness. In all seriousness though, I usually sit at the computer with my notebook full of index cards, scribbles, and post its and fuss with characters until we come to some compromise about what will be written.

I also do a lot of scene writing by hand. This ends up being more of a sketch so that when I type I'm more focused on filling in the gaps and adding details.

If you could give any advice to writers what would it be?
Live a life worth writing.

If you could invite your favorite literary character to dinner, who would it be and why?
Probably Jacob Grimm from Tom McNeal's Far Far Away. That's one of my favorite books of all time. I've had a fascination with the Grimms since I spent a year researching them academically. I'd ask him to share all his wisdom and teach me how to tell off bullies in German.

What is your favorite writing quirk?
I like using "O" instead of "Oh." It just seems more appropriate. That large, empty letter sums up the sentiment behind the thought better, I think, and I always image someone pantomiming it when they read. See there, you just did it, didn't you?

Most embarrassing high school experience:
Woah. That's a hard one! I have lived so many lives since high school, as all readers and writers have, but I'll give it a go. I suppose it would have to be when I went on one of the first dates with my now husband. I was sixteen and working every Saturday as a clown. Yep. You read that right. I wore the full get-up too. The makeup, wig, outfit--the works! Somehow the makeup we weren't suppose to use (because it didn't come off well) got mixed in with my stuff that day, and when I left to go on our date, I still had two perfectly round red circles on my cheeks. I looked and felt like a goof. But he eventually married me anyway, so who's the clown now?

Ten Fabled facts:
  1. Trapped in a world of dark magic, Rowena must learn how to become her own hero. Easier said than done.
  2. In Mezzanine, neither time nor death exist.
  3. Many storybook characters appear, but they're not as friendly as we remember.
  4. Kidnapping and slavery doesn't sound like a fairy tale, or does it?
  5. Adelaide Kane would be my pick to play Rowena in a movie
  6. The Brothers Grimm make an appearance.
  7. Someone becomes possessed, and someone gets married.
  8. Sometimes aligning with your enemies is the only solution.
  9. Betrayal of a sister is the worst of all wounds.
  10. Home isn't how she left it.
Once again, thank you for taking the time to talk with us & good luck with your new novel!

Every Last Word
by Tamara Ireland Stone
Release Date: June 16, 2015

From Goodreads:
If you could read my mind, you wouldn't be smiling.

Samantha McAllister looks just like the rest of the popular girls in her junior class. But hidden beneath that straightened hair and expertly applied makeup is a secret that her friends would never understand: Sam has Purely-Obsessional OCD and is consumed by a stream of dark thoughts and worries that she can't turn off.

Second-guessing every move, thought, and word makes daily life a struggle, and it doesn't help that her lifelong friends will turn toxic at the first sign of a wrong outfit, wrong lunch, or wrong crush. Yet Sam knows she'd be truly crazy to leave the protection of the most popular girls in school. So when Sam meets Caroline, she has to keep her new friend with a refreshing sense of humor and no style a secret, right up there with Sam's weekly visits to her psychiatrist.

Caroline introduces Sam to Poet's Corner, a hidden room and tight-knit group of misfits who have been ignored by the school at large. Sam is drawn to them immediately, especially a guitar-playing guy with a talent for verse, and starts to discover a whole new side of herself. Slowly, she begins to feel more "normal" than she ever has as part of the popular crowd...until she finds a new reason to question her sanity and all she holds dear.

| Goodreads | Barnes & Noble | Amazon |

My pick this week is Every Last Word by Tamara Ireland Stone. I really like self-growth books like this one seems to be. I'm excited to see how Sam handles this new found double life of hers; I hope she kicks those popular girls to the curb! Oh, and a guitar-strumming hottie? Yes please.

Review (51): Such a Rush by Jennifer Echols

Such a Rush
by Jennifer Echols

Release Date: July 10, 2012
Publisher: MTV Books
Pages: 336
Format: Hardcover
Source: Library

My Thoughts:
Leah has always lived in run down trailer parks that happened to be near the airport. Her mom--when she bothers to stay home longer than a few hours--never stops complaining about the noise, but Leah can’t get enough. She takes advantage of her proximity to the airport and lands a job in the office at the age of 14. But still, this isn’t close enough. She doesn’t just want to watch and listen to airplanes take off and land, she wants to fly. She saves up as much as she can, forges her moms signature, and makes a deal with Mr. Hall for flying lessons. Three and a half years later she is able to get her commercial pilot’s license and can now be paid for doing what she loves. Unfortunately, Mr. Hall passes away before she is able to start working for him. His reckless son, Grayson, who is also just 18-years-old, decides he’s going to run the family business and he wants Leah to fly for him like she promised his dad. Leah refuses, but he isn’t taking no for an answer. He blackmails her into not only working for him, but also into dating his twin brother, Alec.

Such a Rush sucks you in from the start. Jennifer Echols just knows what she’s doing when it comes to contemporary YA. I loved reading about the whole flying and being a pilot thing. I think airplanes are amazing. Being able to get on and, a hand full of hours later, get off in a completely different country or continent is just...wow. Echols describes everything really well and it wasn’t at all that confusing. I had no idea just how dangerous flying one of those things actually is! But it does sound like a great adrenaline rush and I’d be lying if I said I wouldn’t love to try it.

Leah is a great MC; she is strong, smart, and driven. She has an irresponsible mother who thinks she’s the child which has forced Leah to grow up faster than she should have had to. She actually pays most of the bills, including half the rent, because her mom can’t keep a steady job. All of this is done without complaint as she spends every free hour she has working. With help from Mr. Hall she is able to find a way out of this life; becoming a pilot allows her to fly literally and figuratively. I almost wish there were a sequel so we could see where Leah ends up.

And, of course, we also have Grayson who I found to be quite pleasant when he wasn’t intentionally trying to be a douche. His feelings are obvious from the beginning and he says some really harsh things to Leah throughout the novel mostly because he is trying to push her away. I think she forgave him a bit too easily at the end...I would have made him grovel a bit. The tension between them was great. I read this so quickly because I HAD to know where their relationship was going. Besides these two and Mr. Hall, I didn’t really like any of the other characters. Alec was a bit too boring for my taste and Leah’s best friend, Molly, seemed shady from the start.
